Typhoon Yagi expected to approach Shenzhen by early morning with gusts reaching force 8, stunning lightning in Haikou

5th September 2024 – (Hong Kong) China’s National Meteorological Centre has issued a red alert as Super Typhoon Yagi, is projected to make landfall between Hainan’s Qionghai and Guangdong’s Dianbai coastal areas tomorrow evening, potentially becoming the strongest typhoon to hit Guangdong in a decade.

As of 10am on 5th September, the typhoon had intensified rapidly, escalating three levels in strength within a single day to reach super typhoon status with winds of up to 16-17 on the Beaufort scale. The Shenzhen Meteorological Office reported that the eye of the typhoon is distinctly visible, with the storm expected to come closest to the city tonight, ranging between 320-370 kilometres away. Land gusts could reach up to force 8.

In response, extensive preemptive measures are being enacted across affected regions. Rail operations, including services heading towards Zhanjiang West, have been adjusted or suspended to ensure safety. Airlines such as Shenzhen Airlines and China Southern Airlines have cancelled multiple flights scheduled for 5th and 6th September, affecting several airports including Zhuhai, Macao International, and Haikou.

The imminent threat posed by Typhoon Yagi has already prompted awe-inspiring scenes in Haikou, where stunning lightning displays lit up the night sky, reminiscent of cinematic special effects, reported Xinhua News Agency.

Local authorities in Haikou have initiated comprehensive emergency protocols effective noon 5th September, which include the suspension of schools, work, transportation, ferry services, park access, and business operations. Similarly, all flights at Haikou’s Meilan International Airport have been cancelled from the evening of 5th September until the night of 6th September.

The entire Hainan high-speed railway network, along with urban rail services in Haikou, will cease operations starting from the evening of 5th September, with the suspension expected to continue through 7th September.

In Zhanjiang, a sweeping shutdown is also in effect, which includes suspension of schools, tourist attractions, ferry services, construction sites, outdated electrification areas, and public gatherings for 5th September.

Additionally, schools, kindergartens, and educational institutions in Yangxi County, Guangdong, have confirmed a cessation of activities for 5th and 6th September, adhering to local emergency response strategies.
