14th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) In a departing message delivered on Monday, just a week before leaving office, U.S. President Joe Biden emphasised the importance of addressing China’s “overcapacity” and its dominance in the clean energy supply chain. He characterised this challenge as a competition the United States “must win.”
Biden claimed that his administration has positioned the U.S. favourably in the long-term competition with China, asserting that the Chinese economy “will never suppress” that of the United States due to the efforts made during his presidency to enhance American competitiveness. “When I took office, you all recall, and the experts believe … it was inevitable that China’s economy would surpass ours. However, we in this room said, no, we make the investments in ourselves, we protect our workers and technology. That will not happen now,” he stated at the U.S. State Department.
He further noted that China has become “weaker” as a result of the U.S. ’s efforts in collaboration with allies to counter Beijing’s influence in high technology, trade, and the Indo-Pacific region throughout his four years in office.
Biden expressed confidence that his administration is handing over a “very strong hand” to his successor. “We’re leaving them an America with more friends and strong reliance, whose adversaries are weaker and under pressure,” he remarked.
The president’s strategy to unite U.S. allies in confronting the economic and military challenges posed by China, particularly as its companies gain global market share and its naval presence expands, has garnered broad support from Democrats and some members of Trump’s party.
