31st October 2024 – (Kyiv) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Wednesday that Ukraine has formally requested long-range Tomahawk missiles from the United States, as reported by the Ukrayinska Pravda media outlet. This revelation comes amidst ongoing tensions with Russia and growing concerns over the conflict’s escalation.
Zelensky described the request as a confidential matter between Ukraine and the White House, responding to recent media speculation regarding the missile acquisition. The president emphasised that the long-range missiles are intended as a “preventive tool,” to be deployed only should Russia continue to escalate its military actions.
“This was confidential information between Ukraine and the White House,” Zelensky stated, reinforcing the strategic nature of the request. He articulated that the Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of approximately 2,400 kilometres, form part of Ukraine’s broader “victory plan,” aimed at enhancing its defensive capabilities without resorting to nuclear options.
Western media outlets had previously reported that Zelensky’s request for Tomahawk missiles was included in a proposed “non-nuclear deterrence package.” The move reflects Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to bolster its military strength and assert its position against perceived Russian aggression.
