15th January 2025 – (Los Angeles) Edwin Castro, the Altadena resident who famously won the $2 billion Powerball jackpot in 2023, has faced significant losses as wildfires ravage parts of Los Angeles County. After claiming his prize, which netted him approximately $1 billion after taxes, Castro invested in several luxury properties, including homes in Malibu, Altadena, and the Hollywood Hills.
Recent satellite imagery reviewed by The Times reveals that by the evening of 8th January, two of Castro’s homes were situated within evacuation zones, while his Malibu property was completely destroyed in the Palisades fire that ignited on 7th January. The lost residence was a two-bedroom mansion valued at $3.85 million, purchased just months prior in September 2023.
As the wildfires continue to threaten the region, Castro’s $25.5 million estate in the Hollywood Hills also fell within the evacuation zone due to the ongoing Sunset fire near Runyon Canyon. Meanwhile, his Altadena home, valued at $3.98 million, was threatened by the Eaton fire but ultimately spared, along with the gas station where he purchased the winning Powerball ticket.
Castro acquired the Malibu home through an LLC, which shares management with the entities used to purchase his other properties. Despite his newfound wealth and the media attention surrounding his lottery win, Castro has remained largely out of the public eye since claiming his jackpot.
