12th January 2025 – (Phuket) The recent kidnapping of Chinese actor Wang Xing in Myanmar has severely undermined the confidence of Chinese tourists in Thailand’s safety, leading to a significant number of cancellations of travel plans. Despite the peak holiday season in Phuket, local reports indicate a marked decrease in Chinese visitors, with many opting to stay away.
A Chinese tourist, who arrived in Phuket from Shanghai last Wednesday, noted that the seafood market, typically bustling with Chinese visitors at this time of year, was noticeably less crowded, allowing her to dine without waiting. Meanwhile, a local diving instructor from China, affirmed that the tourism sector has indeed been impacted by the news surrounding Wang’s abduction, citing numerous cancellations of flights, hotel bookings, and diving reservations. Many families are expressing concern after hearing the news and are discouraging their relatives from travelling to Thailand.
Tourism is a vital industry for Thailand, with the country attracting 35.54 million foreign visitors in 2024. The international tourism revenue reached approximately 1.67 trillion Thai Baht, with China, Malaysia, and India being the top three source markets.
