16th January 2025 – (Melbourne) Chinese player Wang Xiyu delivered a compelling performance at the Australian Open on Thursday, showcasing her powerful groundstrokes but ultimately succumbing to eighth seed Emma Navarro in a nail-biting three-set encounter. The match concluded with Navarro triumphing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 after two hours and 11 minutes of intense competition.
Wang, who took a commanding lead of 4-2 in the decisive third set, appeared poised for an upset before Navarro demonstrated remarkable resilience to clinch victory. The match was characterised by exceptional baseline rallies, with both players exchanging breaks in a gripping display of tennis.
Despite producing 25 winners, Wang’s 39 unforced errors proved detrimental, marking a repeat defeat to Navarro in Melbourne for the second consecutive year. Navarro, now set to face former world No. 2 Ons Jabeur in the third round, expressed her relief at finding her rhythm late in the match. “I was able to find something at the end; it was really tough,” she remarked.
Wang’s path to the second round had been marked by promise, having reached a career-high ranking of No. 49 before a challenging 2024 season that saw her exit in the first round of three majors. After a strong opening match against Julia Grabher, she faced a significant challenge in Navarro, who had previously enjoyed a semifinal run at the US Open.
The match began with Navarro appearing slightly shaky on serve, allowing Wang to break early with a stunning forehand winner. However, both players struggled to maintain their serve amidst relentless baseline exchanges, resulting in a series of breaks. Navarro eventually regained her composure, taking the first set after exploiting vulnerabilities in Wang’s service game.
Wang bounced back fiercely in the second set, breaking Navarro early and establishing a 4-1 lead. Despite a brief lapse that saw her drop serve, she levelled the match with a powerful forehand. The momentum shifted again in the third set, with Wang demonstrating tenacity and agility, even recovering from a hard tumble on the court.
However, as unforced errors began to accumulate, Wang’s struggles on serve became increasingly evident, leading to her heartbreaking exit from the tournament. The match showcased both players’ talents and highlighted Navarro’s ascent in the women’s game, while Wang’s potential remains a source of optimism for the future.
