Wang Yi set to visit Japan next month following efforts to strengthen Sino-Japanese relations

16th January 2025 – (Tokyo) The Japanese government is preparing to extend an invitation to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for a visit next month, a significant step aimed at facilitating a future state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping. This initiative marks a continuation of diplomatic efforts that began last year when Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and National Security Adviser Takeo Akiba made separate trips to Beijing.

Wang Yi’s upcoming visit is expected to involve discussions with senior Japanese officials, providing an opportunity to address historical grievances and current tensions between the two nations. During a recent meeting in Beijing with a delegation of Japanese lawmakers, Wang emphasised the potential for dialogue to resolve existing issues. He stated, “As long as the direction is clear, the foundation is robust, and perceptions are correct, China and Japan can effectively address existing and potential challenges and disputes through dialogue and consultation.”

The delegation, led by Hiroshi Moriyama, Secretary General of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, concluded a three-day visit to China on Wednesday. Wang noted that the current moment presents a “crucial timing” for improving Sino-Japanese relations, highlighting that both countries’ governing parties play a pivotal role in advancing bilateral ties.

For relations to develop sustainably, Wang asserted that both nations should recognise themselves as “cooperative partners” rather than viewing each other as threats. He urged Japan to move past its rhetoric of considering China an “unprecedented challenge” and to maintain a spirit of reflection and apology regarding historical actions.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, heightening scrutiny on Japan’s stance regarding historical issues and the sensitive topic of Taiwan.
