14th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) The wife and son of Chung Kim-wah, a former assistant professor at Polytechnic University and Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute’s (HKPORI) former deputy executive director, have been taken into custody by Hong Kong’s national security police as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged national security offences. Chung is currently wanted on charges of inciting secession and colluding with foreign forces, offences under the contentious national security law enacted by Beijing.
This morning, authorities brought Chung’s wife, identified as Ms Ng, and their son to the police station to assist in the investigation. This follows the detention of Robert Chung, president of the HKPORI, who was also taken in for questioning earlier that day.
The police conducted a thorough search at the HKPORI office, seizing a significant number of documents aimed at tracing connections to Chung Kim-wah and determining whether any financial assistance had been provided to him by the institute or its staff. As of now, no formal arrests have been made in connection with the investigation.
Chris Tang, the Secretary for Security, addressed media inquiries regarding the detentions, clarifying that while there are suspicions linking Robert Chung to the fugitive, the investigation is unrelated to the polling activities of the HKPORI. He emphasised that no charges have yet been laid against Robert Chung.
