10th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) Shiu Ka-chun, the former pro-democracy lawmaker and social worker, has sadly passed away at the age of 55 following complications related to stomach cancer. His wife, Kelly, announced the news via a heartfelt post on his social media account, stating that he died peacefully at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 10th January, 2025, surrounded by family and friends.
In her message, Kelly revealed that Shiu had suffered complications after undergoing surgery for stomach cancer. Despite the challenges he faced during his illness, she noted that he remained steadfast and found strength through his faith, which allowed him to maintain a sense of inner peace even in difficult times. She also mentioned that further details regarding his memorial service would be shared later.
Shiu was diagnosed with stage three stomach cancer in October 2023 and had been readmitted to the hospital recently due to worsening symptoms. In earlier posts, he shared his struggles, including the need for a feeding tube, and expressed his determination to fight through the illness.
Before entering politics, Shiu worked as a lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University and was elected to the Legislative Council in 2016, representing the Social Welfare constituency. He gained prominence during the 2014 Occupy Central protests and faced legal consequences for his activism, including an eight-month prison sentence in 2019 for public nuisance charges.
