10th January 2025 – (Hong Kong) A woman from the Wong Tai Sin community has reported a purse theft incident that occurred while she was travelling on the KMB route 211 bus at the beginning of January. According to her account shared on a local Facebook page, she was standing in a crowded area of the bus with her handbag unzipped when a man in a down jacket positioned himself behind her, using his jacket to obscure her bag. It was only after she disembarked at MTR Wong Tai Sin Station that she discovered her purse, containing HK$1,000 in cash, credit cards, and identification, had been stolen.
This incident marks the third report of thefts occurring on the same bus line within six months, raising alarms among local residents. Community members have expressed their concerns online, questioning the recent surge in such crimes. Comments included, “It used to be so safe here, why are there so many pickpockets now?” and “Everyone should be careful as we approach the Lunar New Year.”
In response to the incident, KMB stated that they received a notification from a passenger on 3rd January, reporting a suspected theft that occurred on 2nd January while using the 211 route. The bus company has cooperated with police investigations and encourages passengers to promptly report any criminal activity to the bus driver.
The Facebook page “Tsui Chuk Street” highlighted that this was the third similar theft reported in a short span, suggesting that habitual offenders are taking advantage of crowded conditions during peak hours in the mornings and evenings. The community has been urged to take precautions, such as securing their bags and keeping valuables within sight.
