7th January 2025 – (Beijing) At least 95 people lost their lives and 130 others were injured when a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning. President Xi Jinping has ordered a comprehensive response to save lives and mitigate casualties.

Xi, who also serves as the General Secretary of the Communist Party and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, issued critical directives focusing on urgent search and rescue operations, as well as medical care for those injured. He highlighted the importance of preventing secondary disasters, ensuring the effective resettlement of affected residents, and managing the aftermath of the earthquake.

Emphasising the need for a robust response, Xi insisted on enhancing earthquake monitoring and early warning systems, swiftly distributing disaster relief supplies, and prioritising the repair of damaged infrastructure. He stressed the necessity of meeting the basic needs of residents and ensuring their safety and comfort during the harsh winter months.

Premier Li Qiang echoed these sentiments in his instructions, urging authorities to rapidly assess the impact of the earthquake and organise thorough search and rescue efforts to reduce casualties. He noted the challenges posed by the cold plateau environment and called for every available resource to support the affected population’s basic livelihoods and warmth.

To oversee the rescue and relief operations, Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has been dispatched to the disaster site, where he will coordinate efforts to provide immediate assistance to those in need.
