14th September 2024 – (Shanghai) Xiaomi’s Mi Home Security Camera has come under scrutiny once again following a troubling incident in which a mother in China heard a strange male voice emanating from the device while cleaning her home.

The incident occurred when the mother, who had purchased the camera to monitor her children, was startled to hear an unfamiliar voice communicating through the device. In her distress, she questioned the camera, asking, “What is this voice?” The situation prompted her to share her experience online, expressing her shock and fear at the intrusion.

In response, Xiaomi stated that the camera was functioning normally and that they would engage third-party experts to conduct a thorough investigation. The company reassured users that privacy and security remain a priority, asserting that if a user’s account were compromised, others could potentially access the device.

This is not the first time Xiaomi’s security cameras have faced allegations of privacy breaches. Last year, another incident involved a woman in Jiangsu province who reported that her camera appeared to move autonomously, capturing images of her without consent. Such reports have led to increasing scrutiny over the security of smart home devices.

As concerns grow, the implications extend beyond individual users, with the issue also affecting international relations. Recently, the South Korean military removed approximately 1,300 Chinese-made surveillance cameras from its frontline units due to fears they could compromise security. Investigations revealed that these cameras were transmitting footage to servers located in mainland China.
