18th January 2025 – (London) A horrific new report from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has unveiled the dire state of the National Health Service (NHS), revealing that patients are increasingly receiving care in unsuitable environments, such as hospital corridors and converted spaces. This extensive 460-page document, based on survey responses from over 5,000 nursing staff, highlights the urgent need for systemic reform within the NHS.

According to the report, nearly 67% of nurses reported delivering care in overcrowded and inappropriate settings daily. The consequences of these conditions are chilling: patients are often left without access to essential medical equipment, such as oxygen and cardiac monitors, and the dignity of care is severely compromised. Nurses have described situations where they must provide treatment in public view, including a distressing account of a patient miscarrying in a corridor.

Professor Nicola Ranger, RCN General Secretary and Chief Executive, emphasised the gravity of the situation, stating, “This devastating testimony from frontline nursing staff shows patients are coming to harm every day, forced to endure unsafe treatment.” Over 90% of those surveyed expressed concerns that patient safety was being significantly jeopardised by the current care environment.

The report highlights alarming instances of neglect, including patients being left unattended on trolleys for hours, leading to avoidable deaths. One nurse recounted the tragic case of a cancer patient whose treatment was compromised due to being placed in a busy corridor, ultimately resulting in her passing.
