2nd November 2023 – (Stockholm) In response to the increased risk of terrorist attacks, the Swedish Police announced on Wednesday that bags would no longer be allowed at major public events. The decision comes as the terrorist threat level in Sweden stands at 4 on a 5-grade scale, indicating a significant threat, according to Buster Mirow, a press secretary at the Swedish Police.

The bag ban encompasses major sporting events, concerts, and festive celebrations, as stated on the Swedish Police’s website. This measure aims to enhance security and mitigate potential risks associated with the presence of bags at these gatherings.

The decision to implement the bag ban follows the elevation of the terrorist threat level to “high” (level 4) in mid-August. Charlotte von Essen, the director general of the Swedish Security Service, highlighted Sweden’s transition from being considered a legitimate target to being viewed as a prioritized target for terrorist attacks.

Recent incidents involving the desecration and burning of copies of the Quran in Sweden have ignited anger and criticism among Muslims worldwide. These events have raised concerns about potential retaliatory actions and further heightened the need for enhanced security measures.

The tragic killing of two Swedish soccer supporters who were visiting Belgium for a game on October 16th further underscored the evolving threat landscape. The perpetrator released a video in which he claimed to have targeted the victims as a means of avenging Muslims.
