2nd November 2023 – (Bletchley Park) Political leaders, representatives from AI companies, and experts convened in Britain on Wednesday for a global summit on artificial intelligence (AI) safety. The two-day event, held at Bletchley Park, located 50 miles north of London, aims to assess the risks associated with AI and explore ways to mitigate them through international cooperation, according to a statement from the British government.

Prominent figures expected to attend the summit include British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. China’s Vice Minister of Science and Technology Wu Zhaohui is also participating in the summit, leading a Chinese delegation.

Prime Minister Sunak, whose government is hosting the summit, expressed the “ultimate goal” of working towards an international approach to ensure the safety of AI systems before their release, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with partners.

The summit’s agenda includes a series of roundtable discussions on the risks posed by future AI developments and the role of national policymakers and the international community in harnessing the opportunities presented by AI.

China recently launched the Global Artificial Intelligence Governance Initiative during the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in Beijing on 18th October. This initiative aims to address concerns about AI development and governance on a global scale, providing a constructive approach and laying the groundwork for international discussions and rule-making.

The summit at Bletchley Park serves as a crucial platform for leaders and experts to share insights, exchange ideas, and develop a shared understanding of the risks associated with AI. By fostering international collaboration and cooperation, the event seeks to pave the way for a safer and more responsible future for AI technology.

As AI continues to advance and impact various aspects of society, it is paramount to address potential risks and establish robust governance frameworks. The outcomes and discussions from this summit have the potential to shape the global approach to AI safety and contribute to the development of ethical and responsible AI practices.
