20th April 2023 – (Manila) Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced that he will speak with Beijing’s ambassador to Manila, Huang Xilian, to seek an explanation for the envoy’s comments regarding the Philippines’ stance on Taiwan’s independence. The Chinese ambassador had stated that the Philippines’ decision to expand US military access had caused concern among the Chinese people and advised the country to oppose Taiwan’s independence unequivocally if it genuinely cares about the 150,000 Filipinos working in Taiwan.

Marcos stated that he was “a little surprised” by the envoy’s remarks and interpreted them as a warning to avoid intensifying tensions. The Chinese embassy later claimed that the ambassador was misquoted. China’s Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, is set to visit the Philippines from Friday to discuss regional security issues and strengthen ties as the Philippines strengthens its defense alliance with the US.
