28th October 2023 – (Hong Kong) The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is currently investigating a case of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infection, prompting authorities to advise the public to prioritize good personal hygiene, particularly hand hygiene.

The case involves a 72-year-old man who has underlying health conditions. On 19th October, he was discovered unconscious and running a fever. He was immediately taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Kwong Wah Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment on the same day. Thankfully, his condition has stabilized following the medical intervention.

Laboratory tests conducted on the patient’s blood sample confirmed the presence of Hib, while the clinical diagnosis indicated pneumonia. The individual lives alone and does not have any recent travel history. The CHP is currently conducting ongoing investigations to determine the source and potential spread of the infection.

Invasive Hib infection has been classified as a statutorily notifiable infectious disease since July 2008. This type of infection typically manifests as meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain, often accompanied by the entry of bacteria into the bloodstream. Invasive Hib infection can also affect various other parts of the body, such as the lungs, epiglottis (upper part of the throat), joints, and bones. Swift administration of appropriate antibiotic treatment is crucial in managing the infection.
