20th July 2023 – (Hong Kong) The Department of Justice has applied for an injunction and interim injunction to the court to prohibit four illegal acts related to the “Hong Kong Independence” protest song “Glory to Hong Kong“, including dissemination and reproduction. The case will be heard in the High Court tomorrow. Many politicians and legal professionals believe that the injunction, if granted, will have a deterrent effect and consolidate the effectiveness of the national security law since its implementation.

Former member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Tam Yiu-chung, stated that the song was born during the period of violent protests and promoted “Hong Kong independence” ideology, which is harmful to young people. He believes that the song should have been removed long ago, and hopes that the court can issue an injunction to cut off the channels of dissemination of the song and consolidate the stable social environment since the implementation of the national security law.

Meanwhile, New People’s Party legislator and practicing barrister, Eunice Yung, stated that the SAR government and legislators have previously sent multiple letters to Google, requesting the removal of the song, but the company has ignored the complaints. She believes that the injunction, if granted, will have a deterrent effect, as anyone who disseminates the song will bear legal consequences. She also affirmed the Department of Justice’s efforts to protect the dignity of the national anthem and consolidate the effectiveness of the national security law through various means.
